Welcome to the Junior League of Seattle -
NW Art Project at Blackwell!
Selected Art pieces will be displayed in the Blackwell Library for students to appreciate
from October 4th - November 7th.
The Junior League of Seattle founded The Northwest Art Project in 1960, initiated by JLS member Dee Dickinson, who noticed many students had never seen original artwork or been to a museum. Beginning with a single piece of art donated in 1960 by local artist Kenneth Callahan, the Northwest Art Collection has now grown to 89 diverse and varied pieces by regional artists.
The project provides each participating school with one traveling art exhibit and some materials for educators and PTSA Art Volunteers. Schools get five weeks with the exhibit in their school. The volunteers or educators lead art lessons in their schools with the original artwork present. Through informal but intimate discussion of themed exhibits, students learn critical thinking skills, northwest art history, and get a chance to work in various art-making techniques.
NW Art Project at Blackwell:
Each teacher has a schedule of open times in the library where they are welcome to sign up for a brief chance for their class to view the artwork and have a quick lesson/chat about the works we have in the space. This is led by Jessie Parker. If you would like to assist or lead your own sessions, please contact Jessie at art@blackwellptsa.org
Each class is encouraged to plan an art lesson around one or more of the artworks available. This can be led by Art Volunteers or Class Teacher and inspired by the elements, principles, techniques or artists included in the exhibit.
