Back to Business Day is an event coordinated by PTSA volunteers to provide one stop access at the start of the school year for parents to fill out necessary school paperwork, pay classroom fees, find out your children's new teacher(s), sign up for PTSA, learn about before and after school activities, and learn about volunteering opportunities. **New this year, we are offering two time slots for families. Wednesday, Aug. 29 from 5:00-7:00pm and Thursday, Aug. 30 from 12:00 - 2:00pm

PTSA volunteers work with an outside vendor to provide an assortment of apparel with Blackwell Bobcat school colors and logos. Program Chair manages orders of Blackwell Spirit Wear multiple times during the school year and ensures, once orders are received, that merchandise is distributed to the appropriate classrooms.

Family Bingo Night is coordinated by PTSA volunteers. This event is a huge hit with the entire community and includes 400+ prizes and raffle baskets. Teachers serve as game callers.

Students and families are invited to create gingerbread houses for display in the school library. Houses are categorized by grade level, and classes are encouraged to come through to view and vote on their favorite creations. Small prizes are given to grade level winners.

Enrichment

Art Smart

Art Smart is a PTSA sponsored program that brings art enrichment directly to the classrooms. Once a month, volunteer docents visit the classrooms to teach students elements of art and design while exploring a range of art techniques. Student artwork is displayed in the hallways throughout the school year and highlights are showcased at a combined Music/Art event in the spring. One or more volunteers per class are needed. Volunteers are not required to have an art background, just a love for helping children express their creativity. Curriculum and training support are provided.
The Program Chair supports and manages the art program and ensures supplies are stocked and volunteers are staffed to support various art initiatives throughout the year.

The Glass & Clay program is a part of the volunteer-run Art Smart program at Blackwell. It provides students with materials and instruction to exercise their creativity with these fun materials. Blackwell has a kiln purchased by PTSA funds and maintained by PTSA volunteers.
The Program Chair supports and manages the clay/glass program and ensures supplies are stocked and schedule for kiln and volunteer support is established and managed.
Reflections Art Program

The Reflections Arts in Education program is a National PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of the program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works created around a theme. The program begins at the local PTA level and entries can progress through council, state and national rounds of competition.
Program Chair promotes Reflections art program to students, collects submissions and organizes an evening reception for students to share their work. S/he also submits all entries to district Reflections competition, and follows up with any entries that receive special recognition.

Math Challenge is a volunteer-run program designed to give students K-5 opportunities to sharpen their mathematical problem-solving skills. Fifteen Math Challenges are published throughout the school year.

Every other week, a new Math Challenge is available to download from Math in Action (www.mathinaction.org) and print at home. Students must submit their solutions to each Math Challenge by the due date, either to the office or to their teachers. PTSA volunteers correct all worksheet. Then, every student who achieves the required number of solutions in their grade level receives a prize provided by PTSA funds.

Blackwell PTSA offers language classes for the 2018-2019 school year. Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:15AM - 9:15AM.

At Sponge, we see language as a passport to global citizenship. Students learn to see the world through a different lens while acquiring language skills and the confidence to use them. Sponge classes are immersion based, and taught by native speakers using games, art, songs, stories, drama and movement to help children build language skills! We believe the best way to learn a language is to be immersed in

Welcome to the Kids University program at Blackwell Elementary School. Make the most of after-school time with active learning opportunities designed to engage and expand young minds. Choose from a menu of multi-week experiences taught by caring, certified YMCA staff like sports, arts and other hands-on learning activities! The After-School Enrichment Pass guarantees you early class selection each session.

Includes early release days. Does not include no school days.

Session 1 runs 9/4-10/26/18.

Brewer Basketball

Brewer Basketball is Back!

Come play basketball in the mornings before school! Come play in a fun open gym atmosphere with your friends!

Each class starts at 8:15 with a warm up activity, and is followed by basketball scrimmages. Teams will be rotated throughout each class to ensure that all the basketball players get to play with and against one another.

The last 10 minutes consists of a large group game then all the student athletes are dismissed at 9:05 to go to their class line up spots before the first bell.

All ability levels are welcomed!

Tuesdays: 2nd and 3rd grade (boys and girls)
Wednesdays: 4th grade (boys and girls)
Thursdays: 5th grade (boys and girls)
Fridays: 2nd – 5th grade (GIRLS ONLY)

PTSA offers a school chess club at Blackwell. The club runs September - May, allowing kids to experience the learning and competition of chess. Students in grades K through 5 are invited to join the club. Chess is excellent at teaching kids mental discipline, to focus, to look at all their options, to compete under time pressure, to play fair, that mistakes have consequences, to not give up when behind, and many more life lessons.

Running Club

Running club

Come and run laps after school with all your fellow bobcat runners!

All Blackwell Students K-5th are welcome to join.

We will run on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:50pm - 4:25pm on the Sand Field on the playground. Please be there to pick up your runner by 4:30pm.

The Fall session for Running Club will be October 1st - November 15th and the Spring Term will pick up in late February or early March weather permitting through May 31st. The last day of Running Club in May will be a fun celebration for our runners!

Laps will be totaled each week with the runners earning awards to add to their running necklace for benchmarks they achieve over the year.

In case of bad weather we will be holding running club in the gym where we will play a big group game. You would then pick up your child at the gym by 4:30pm.

The Blackwell yearbook is compiled and published by PTSA volunteers, with the help of our vendor LifeTouch.

Volunteers Needed:
If you are 1) an aspiring photographer 2) a professional photographer or 3) handy with your phone's camera, please contact us! We need photographers - all skill levels welcome. In addition, we are looking for someone who can serve in an administrative capacity (i.e. keep photos in order, etc).

The talent show is an annual event run by PTSA volunteers where students show off their talents at an evening show for Blackwell families. Students participate in an “audition” and dress rehearsal where they are guided by staff members and volunteer leaders.

PTSA volunteers organize and run a carnival with games and activities for students to enjoy with their families to celebrate Halloween. Prizes are given at each game. Decorations are placed throughout the gym, commons, and hallways. A pizza dinner is available for purchase.

Our Fun Run will be conducted by the FundRunners company. They provide character building messages during the week leading up to the fun run, starting off with an energetic kick-off assembly, as well as providing daily and overall incentives related to the fundraiser for classes and individuals.

Walk to School Month gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking. The event at Blackwell is coordinated by PTSA volunteers.
Program Chair coordinates promotional materials and activities to encourage students/families to walk to school during National Walk to School month. Chair also creates calendar for students to monitor their transportation methods and provides prizes (donated and purchased through small allotted budget) to students whose names are randomly drawn from turned in calendars.

With the help of our school principal, the school counselor, and the student body, PTSA volunteers coordinate outreach projects for students to participate in at various times throughout the year. These include candy drives, food drives, school supply drives, and exchanges with Sister Schools.
